"MARI" MONUMENT IN PAFOS

Proposal in the architectural competition for the reformation of the Naval base of "Mari" in the area of Pafos in Cyprus

The aim of the proposal is to pay tribute to the 13 people who have lost their lives on the tragic event of the explosion at the Naval Base in Mari. The primary design element is the need to connect the entrance of the camp to the disaster area. This linear connection is enriched by the features of the landscape and the traces of memory and so it is altered. The area of the thirteen tributes affects the linear axis and alters it. The water tank that survived the destruction and the topography of the area determine the individual changes. The temporal discontinuity caused by the catastrophic eruption, is depicted on the landscape as a crevasse. The boundaries of the crevasse are broken and slide past each other, creating discontinuities defined by landmarks on the landscape. Our proposal, perceives the disaster area as a memorial, trying to enrich the visitor's experience with sensations that exacerbate emotions through an escalated drama path that ends in the area of sacrifice at the traumatized landscape. The water was included in our proposal as a basic reference to the people who died there. Thirteen tubes, have a clear symbolism of the number of these people, and their effort to prevent the explosion. The slope of pipes, highlights this superhuman effort. Visitors through the route can move between the pipes, in order to sense his existence amongst the heroes participating in this way in their sacrifice. For the first time the construction we propose is covered in order to take us to another darker world. A descending route carries us from light to dark. At the end of this route and after we lifted off the ground, the crater is revealed, that is the point of destruction. By having a panoramic view of the region, our gaze travels from the crater to the deep sea and the horizon, filling us with optimism that people have learned from their mistakes and will not allow such a disaster to happen again.
