FRENCH EMBASSY OFFICES IN ATHENS

The offices of French Embassy in Greece which are currently scattered around the center of Athens, are to be relocated to a single building, which is to be radically renovated and upgraded to satisfy the client requirements. The basic idea of the composition constitutes the significance of the micro-landscapes which are small landscapes of vegetation that are placed in the building along a transverse axis, acting as separation between offices. Along the longitudinal axis we placed solid boundaries which divide the spaces and also accommodate building services. In the entrance a new canopy is placed, constructed from perforated and folded metal sheets, acting as a separator from the shops that are situated on the ground floor. Finally the vacant roof-space is transformed into an event-space with panoramic views of the center of Athens and the parliament.

The proposed building seeks to project and promote the agency’s identity as a leading organisation in the communications media sector, both locally and on the global stage. The facade concept, characterised by fluctuating horizontal bands, is an expression of the flows that form the underlying dynamic of the organisation’s continual movement and information flows, whilst also opening a dialogue with the urban traffic flows on the adjacent freeway. The facade proposal plays an active part in forming the internal microclimate, using terracotta cladding to support the porous character of the building skin, whilst the planting, which exists on the exterior and also breaks into the interior, contributes to the bioclimatic nature of the building
