RAILWAY STATIONS IN GHANA

The proposal for the rehabilitation of the railway line along the Accra - Tema corridor will contribute to the improvement of the general infrastructures of Accra. At the same time, the design aims to embrace the particularity of the Ghanaian people, the landscape and the cultures. Those aspects are considered in an attempt for a long-term physical regeneration of the railway corridor of Ghana. On a smaller scale, every design tries to contribute significantly to the improvement and development of all the adjacent areas to the railway stations. The design - both architecture and urban - give importance to the spatial connectivity between the areas on both sides of the railway with different elements / bridges that, besides connecting the multiple platforms, allow a greater permeability of the urban fabric around the stations. At the same time, the projected spaces around them are focused on the ways public spaces connect both physical and social layers in each location in the city of Accra, emphasizing on the distinctive identity of the region around it. The design of the buildings is based on the geometry of the existing railway stations. The trigonometric rooftops, characteristic elements of those structures, are the basis of the concept design.

HOUSING COMPLEX IN ANTIPAROS

The design of a new house complex located in the island of Antiparos became the architectural analogy of the structure of the typical cycladic village. The low-rise and dense planning, the narrow streets, the central square etc. are transferred in the project as a continuation of the landscape and the typology of the traditional architecture. The complex includes 3 cores with 11 houses in total. In every core there is a central patio, that follows the design decisions and the functional needs; it’s the central square of a cycladic village with the surrounding buildings around it. The materials used are white plaster and plastered stone, so that the variation of texture, and not color, intensifies the division of the volumes.

OFFICE BUILDING IN GHANA

The site of the building is located near the industrial area and the port of Tema. This feature becomes very crucial regarding the design parameters. More specifically, there are four points of interest in the surrounding area; the main access to the plot from the Rotary avenue, the city view in the north side of the plot, the port where the new Container Tema Port Terminal is located and finally the sea view. The volumetric of the building is influenced by the two axes that connect those four points and cross through the center of the plot. In this way, the ground floor of the building follows the geometry of the city and unfolds based on the axes of the adjacent roads. Accordingly, the upper floors of the building turn towards the best views of the plot. The building is organized around a central core, the atrium, in a way that amplifies the experience of the building as well as the microclimate. The adjacent floors, all have views towards the central green area, where the sunlight and natural ventilation penetrate the interior of the building. At the same time, the louvers monitor the amount of sunlight that is accessing the indoors for the user’s optimum comfort and create an interesting façade with the various shape formations.

MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT IN GHANA

The Angelina amusement development park is situated in the greater Accra region. It covers an area of 1,400 Acres on the outskirts of Aburi. The archetypes of traditional Ghanaian architecture are the inspiration for our Design Proposal. The round shaped units, their grouping around an atrium with only one entrance and exit, the fencing around the build entities have been part of our research that eventually produced the Master Plan Design. The development comprises an amusement park that combines the most advanced technological features together with a traditional Family Park. The core of the development is the commercial area. A circular building with a void in the middle symbolizes the primal architectural cell around which everything is organized: the shopping malls, the restaurants and bars, the business center and the basic amenities The area of the sports courts and all the athletic facilities, including the large arenas are placed close to the center of the development in a vibrant landscape with large green areas and tree shading that will enhance the microclimate of the site.  The golf course is set on the valley between the two hills. It is an 18-hole golf with sand traps and water features. The club house and all the facilities are situated at the foot of the hill. The hotel complex serves as a landmark, a visual icon for the visitors. The 15-storey building offers outstanding views to the rest of the site and far beyond. It serves as a point of orientation for the visitor. The housing follows the spatial model of organization around a central void, like the other parts of the development. Two neighborhoods- clusters are created in the two ‘hills’ that surround and oversee the ‘valley’ of public uses. On the top of each hill, parks with communal uses are designed. There, residents can find restaurants, kindergartens, schools, meeting spaces and other facilities.

The project will be implemented in 4 phases that is expected to be completed within 7 years. The overall budget will be approximately 350 million dollars.

The proposal concerns the reuse of a former school, situated in the center of the city of Larissa, within an important cultural zone containing a public theater and an extended school complex. The existing building is a typical example of the regulatory institutions (schools, hospitals, and prisons) designed in the 20th century, with the morphologic characteristics of a compact and rigid structure, organized around an enclosed atrium.
Our design strategy is based on the reasoning of “palimpsest”, highlighting the existing structural and architectural elements of the building, thus avoiding the practices of “blank canvas” or deconstruction. Our main objective is the creation of a contemporary school, based on the idea of "extroversion", using the following strategies: (a) blurring the boundary between the facades of the building and the public space of the city and (b) activating the central atrium.
An inner "explosion":
The atrium, located in the center of the building, is redesigned as part of a new transversal axis that connects the “heart” of the building with the public space and the street. The reception, the foyer and the main entrance become the next notional segments of this type of extension that cancels the former “hortus conclusus” characteristics. Furthermore, the existing rigid shell of the building opens towards the street, allowing the visual contact of the students with the city.
An outer "explosion":
The addition of new architectural elements to the facades integrates the building to the city in terms of urban morphology, creating an interesting rhythm and working cohesively to the built environment. Enhancing the concept of movement, pause and dialogue with the city, the additions contribute to the geometrical appropriation of the space by the users but also to the external observers’ perception of the building as a whole.
A modern school is formed, posing a question about the way we interpret the present and the future through the past.

"WHITE OLIVE PREMIUM" HOTEL IN ZAKYNTHOS

The project concerns a new 48-rooms summer hotel in the area of Laganas in Zante island. The hotel consists of two buildings which are arranged on the perimeter of the plot so that they create an interior courtyard with a swimming pool, The units of the rooms are turned towards the swimming pool, so that they all have a pool view. The goal is to create one functional and architectural set, in which volumes of different colors create recesses and projections under a continuous light veil. Double-height spaces, curved geometries and intersected volumes form the architectural identity of the building.

HOUSING COMPLEX IN KAVOURI

Our proposal is about the remodeling of two existing housing buildings in the seafront of Athens. A central corridor defines the new plan of the main building, with two apartments per floor facing towards the sea. When the user enters the site he immediately has an overall understanding of the space while he is guided to the internal garden, the pool and the second separate house. The façade is determined by the volumes that by the elimination of the perimetric balcony give a new identity to the building, while also offer the necessary privacy and shading during the summer.

RESIDENCE MUSEUM IN PARNASSUS

At the foot of Mt. Parnassus, a paternal residence revives decades of history. Stone-built, dark and mysterious, it restores experiences and memories. This building featured some kind of state monopoly, in the form that the latter used to have in Greece four decades ago. Dozens of traders would arrive there on a daily basis to purchase alcohol, matches, oil, cardboard, and salt. Today, forty years later, the dwelling is taking the form of a residence – museum, aiming to both offer accommodation and host an exhibition of collectibles. Consequently, the “monopoly” feature is revived as a place of reminiscence. Rich in attributes, enthralled by associations, subconsciously present. Registered in human memories, it becomes again a threshold of experiences.
Space gains scale, meanings and heterogeneity through sentimentality and emotional awareness of the new user. They refer to an empirical act in a continuous game of semiotics. Everything reflects a human image. Everything speaks to them, for them. The landscape is alive. The architectural implementation is conveyed through a central composite element, that of the wooden showcase. The latter features the heirloom of the “monopoly” as well as dozens of other unique works of art. The wooden self-supporting structure is mounted on a modern fixed base. The form of the compact pedestal varies across the three dimensions throughout the residence. The two elements act as a system of heterochronic references, addressing both the history of the building and the way in which the new user appropriates the space.
The look is directed by the objects and the mystical light. Touch conquers matter. The skin comprehends weight, density, temperature. The visual and haptic sensations determine the intensity of the experience and facilitate the perception of the composition and robustness of the space elements. The natural materials reveal age, while narrating the origin and the way in which they were sculpted. The years passed are reflected in the patinas of aging. The colors and textures compose a special heterotopia, giving rise to a distinct form of habitation, in terms of memory and reminiscence. With a view to physical, visual and intellectual motion in the individual parts of the building, the design aims at a holistic empirical experience, intertwined with time and memory.

"ASTERIAS" HOTEL IN KEFALONIA

The shape of the area and its orientation, determines the basic composing decisions for the complex. The necessity for panoramic view of Vardiani Island has defined the compositional geometry. It was chosen as the main axis of reference, the North-South, with unobstructed views of the sea. Taking the pool area for center, the axes turns by 45 degrees and organizes the individual buildings. In this way, the central building block is a point of reference, both geometric and essential. This relationship of axes forms a centrifugal development of buildings, which is a direct spatial transfer of Asterias. Thus, the individual buildings participate in an overall organization of the area, with a clear holistic orientation. The required surfaces are divided into several individual buildings that take geometric features from the local architecture. The scale of buildings, the clear and symmetrical growth and the roof comprise the basic elements of composition. The reinterpretation of the local architecture is a basic synthetic tool for our proposal, and creates conditions of locality in the identity of the project. The individual buildings are placed in different levels, taking advantage of the tilt of the stadium. Thus, an escalation of tumors is formed throughout the development of the stadium. The blocks of the complex are seperated and the visitor's perception is determined by visual flashes and designed snapshots that offer a sequence of surprises when moving between buildings.

The rectangular plot in the industrial area of Athens, but also the specific needs of the production determined the main volume for the new headquarters of the aluminium constructions company. With this as a start and with the aim of redefinition of the strict industrial building typology, the design of the façade and the rest of the functions took shape. Therefore, the office spaces enclose the production with a single gesture that spreads over all the levels designating a unified geometry, both on the exterior and the interior of the building. The spaces of double height and the internal patio create views between all the spaces: from the entrance towards the second level and the sky; from the first level towards the production area. The visual connection expresses the main philosophy of the company, with the transparency that is achieved. On the exterior, between the volumes of the façade, the horizontal shading system defines the transparency of the offices. The building is the expression of the production that takes place on the inside.
