Close Subterranean Vacation House in Antiparos
The project involves designing a new subterranean vacation house in Agios Dimitrios in Antiparos. The house occupies a 4,000 sq.m. plot and covers an area of 200 sq.m. Additionally, the surrounding area includes houses and accommodations, with Psaralyki Beach located nearby.
The steep slope of the plot, its orientation, and the unobstructed view of Paros shape the basic principles for the house's composition. Due to the terrain's morphology, the design fully encaves the house into the landscape. Consequently, this choice integrates the house seamlessly into the natural environment while minimizing topological intervention. As a result, the house leaves only a minimal environmental and visual trace on the landscape.
The house develops on one level. Access to the plot is from the southeastern end, where a plateau provides parking for three cars. From there, a ramp follows the natural slope of the ground, leading to the building and surrounding area. The layout includes six bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, a guest bathroom, and an auxiliary storage room.
The house projects from the landscape through a clear, straight, horizontal gesture, signifying the architectural intervention in a gentle yet dynamic way. This horizontality is further emphasized by a water element in front of the patio, which features an elongated swimming pool. The horizontal element stands out from the landscape with its off-white color. In contrast, the rest of the walls and partitions consist of uncoated clay, without accent joints, adhering to traditional local standards.
Moreover, the plot's fencing and retaining walls use dry stone, while the building's sliding openings are wooden with off-white shutters. These materials and construction methods ensure the house blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape while maintaining a distinct architectural identity.
Overall, the house harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings. By encaving the house, the design minimizes environmental and visual impact. Furthermore, the careful choice of materials and construction techniques ensures that the house connects to traditional local standards while offering a contemporary living space. Consequently, the project successfully creates a modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing vacation home.
